Reporter, Venture Capital and Startups at Newcomer

Description

$80,000 - $130,000, full-time, remote, year-end performance bonus I’m looking for a hungry venture capital and startups reporter who will regularly break news and capture the Silicon Valley zeitgeist. You’ll be the first editorial hire and be the third person on our team, alongside me—Eric Newcomer—and our chief of staff. You should apply if you want to get your writing and reporting in front of 60,000+ Silicon Valley insiders, learn from and work with me, and have a front seat at a growing and self-sustaining media business. You’ll work as a beat reporter, writing about startups and venture capital. You’ll be expected to file novel, well-reported pieces weekly on the goings on at Sequoia, Andreessen Horowitz, Y Combinator, OpenAI, Stripe, Instacart, and other top startups and venture capital firms. We want stories focused on the money that makes Silicon Valley turn. What are Instacart’s financials? How far have Sequoia’s public holdings crumbled? And we want you to keep an eye on the Silicon Valley power players, whether they’re chasing headlines or not. Don’t let firms like ICONIQ or Dragoneer escape your attention because they’re news shy. Big feature stories and great financial reporting are good business for Newcomer and will translate into your year-end bonus. Newcomer is profitable and cash-flow positive. Newcomer is funded entirely based on its own profits. Revenue for Newcomer is already on track to more than double last year’s earnings in 2023. We’re building a conference series, a YouTube channel, a podcast, and, of course, a newsletter. This is an opportunity for someone who wants to grow and explore – both in their writing and reporting but also by learning about business from the inside. You’ll have the freedom to write reported columns, injecting your analysis and opinion when it’s appropriate. But ultimately, Newcomer is powered by the quality of the information that we can gather. We bring an air of contrarian optimism to our stories. Responsibilities include: • Report and write weekly news articles and feature stories on venture capital and private technology companies. • Develop and maintain sources to stay informed about what’s happening. • Work with me to deliver high quality stories. • Speak at conferences, guest star on podcast episodes, post from social media accounts, and embrace an all-hands-on deck mentality. The ideal candidate has: • 1-5 years of experience in journalism, with the most recent experience specifically covering venture capital, tech, or investing. (Non-traditional candidates will also be considered.) • Strong writing and editing skills are a must. I’ll be editing stories but want to hire someone who is comfortable publishing stories directly to the web when necessary. (We do pay a copyeditor.) • Gumption. Candidate is creative, scoop-hungry, self-motivated, and enjoys working largely independently / async. Nice to haves: • Experience with multimedia journalism, including video and audio • Based in either San Francisco area or New York City Benefits: • Competitive salary and PTO • Company-covered health insurance • Fully remote role with flexibility in hours (deadline dependent) • Bonus structure that rewards you with our success
