Mar 17, 2025 Newsletter: Hope is a Flimsy Business Model

Last year, in a discussion with Andrew Casale, I said something to the effect that publishers must hope users seek out human connections to survive. Andrew cut me off and said, “Hope alone is a terrible business model.” That has stuck with me, and I’ve quoted him ever since. Funny enough, I’ll see Andrew this week at the AdTech Economic Forum, and in April at Digital Day Camp. I don’t hope – I know – he’ll be just as insightful as he was last year in our conversation.

Last week at the Scope3 Landscape event, Dr. Ayana Johnson, a marine biologist and author of What If We Get it Right?: Visions of Climate Futures, echoed Andrew’s words: hope is not enough. She isn’t looking for hope to help battle climate change, but for action. To wait for hope is to wait too long.

Dr. Johnson asked us to imagine a world where we had successfully responded to the climate crisis. I ask that publishers do the same about the future of our industry. There is a version of our ecosystem where user privacy is protected, content creators/publishers are appropriately compensated, and businesses can grow because they reach potential customers with things that can improve their lives.

This won’t happen because we hoped it would happen. It will come about because we built it that way. Let’s begin.

In partnership with Yahoo, AdTech Economic Forum has offered an incredible opportunity to up-and-coming adtech professionals at media agencies, adops professionals at publishers, programmatic traders, sales, marketing and of course, folks working in finance. The winners receive a free ticket to ATEF this week!

Response to the program has been overwhelming with receiving so many applicants that we had four more adtech companies step up to sponsor additional AdTech Futures attendees. A huge thanks goes to Yahoo and to Aditude, Mediaocean, Index Exchange, and Scope3 for making this program a reality!

The The AdTech Economic Forum is THIS Wednesday! Deals will be made. Strategies will shift. The future of AdTech will be debated in one room, one day, one unfiltered conversation.

We are excited to announce two keynote sessions at Digital Day Camp:

  • Nikki Stone, Chief Commerce Officer of GroupM, and Sean Cohan, President of Bell Media, will explore how Canadian media companies, advertisers, agencies, and platforms can foster authentic representation, build inclusive teams, and create impactful content and advertising campaigns that resonate with diverse audiences.
  • Dominic Cozzolino, a Canadian Paralympic Ice Hockey Gold and Silver Medalist, will share his journey of perseverance, adaptability, and the transformative power of sports in overcoming adversity. CBC as an Olympic Partner will have Joe Gottfried participate and discuss the importance of representation in digital storytelling; the human part of the advertising equation. Advertising, at its core, is about people.
