July 28, 2025 Newsletter: Working on making it work

I spent a day in July recording interviews in a studio. The first one we’ll share is with Chris Kane, Founder of Jounce Media. Chris and I are aligned on the mission to understand how our ecosystem works and then make it work better.

The only place we differ is in our approach.

Chris should star on CSI: Lumascape as he and his team meticulously pore through the data to find the patterns. I, on the other hand, am in it to see our industry work better for publishers. The data often disagrees with me. Well, that’s the fight we need to fight. That’s the work we need to do to make it all work.

Anyway, please enjoy my interview with Chris:

Chris won’t be with us in Savannah for Base.Camp, but this same kind of conversation will happen all day, every day of the conference. We’ll look at what the marketplace tells us, and then let’s get crackin’ on making it work for publishers.

What’s keeping you up at night? That’s what BaseCamp Savannah agenda is built for…

What’s keeping you up at night?

Trying to forecast revenue while the market shifts beneath your feet.Working through reorgs that leave your teams stretched thin.Defending site traffic from bots while fighting to stay visible. And the kicker? You’re still being asked to do more with less.

That’s exactly why we built Base•Camp Savannah (October 5-8, 2025). And the still-growing agenda is built for this moment:

  • Where will your 2026 revenue come from, and how do you plan for it now? You’ll join peers navigating the same forecasting pressure and walk away with practical insights to move forward.
  • What does IO-based direct-sold growth actually look like now? Direct-sold is still the biggest channel for many publishers, and yet it’s barely discussed in the trades. We’ll be digging into how to make it more visible, valuable, and sustainable.
  • How do we rethink identity strategies when cookies aren’t the only challenge? We’re talking specifics across both programmatic and direct strategies so you can move beyond the buzzwords.
  • What does it take to lead internal change when everyone is at capacity? Publishers know we need to change, but we don’t know how. We’ll discuss how orgs are rethinking structure and setup to be better positioned for the future.

You don’t haveto tackle this alone. Base•Camp Savannah is where publishers come together to compare notes, challenge assumptions, and walk away with answers that actually move the work forward.

Review the BaseCamp Savannah agenda.

Then, raise your hand to join us.

Reminder: Early bird registration is open for Digital Day Camp!

We heard you. Three sold-out Digital Day Camps later, and the message from our community was clear: we can’t afford to wait. That’s why we’re heading back to Toronto this fall.

On October 22, we’re bringing together Canada’s digital advertising leaders (from publishing, ad tech, brands, and agencies) for a working day built around tackling the real challenges in our industry.

If you’re in the business of shaping where Canadian media and advertising goes next, now’s the time to join us.

At Base.Camp Lisbon, your questions are driving the work we’ll do together

You already know the pressures we’re all facing… market instability, tech fragmentation, shifting strategies, privacy hurdles, and more.

What you need right now are real conversations (with people who get it), and time to work through what comes next. That’s what Base•Camp Lisbon is built for, and together, we’ll be digging into the hard questions like:

  • How do we navigate a future where data strategy is both essential and endlessly complicated? You’re not the only publisher trying to wring clarity and performance out of scattered data systems. We’ll compare how teams are actually doing it, and what’s helping them move faster.
  • What does a future-focused ad ops department really look like? We’re going to talk about what roles survive, what skills need to evolve, and how the smartest orgs are reshaping teams right now.
  • What happens when direct-sold traffic drops? Audience behavior is changing. We’ll work through how to explain that to advertisers, and how to rebuild value in your pitch.
  • Why do buyers keep undervaluing publisher quality? It’s time to stop accepting the “it’s just cheap inventory” narrative. We’re coming at this from multiple angles, how we tell our story, how we show up, and what we own in the process.

It’s all going down, November 2-5, 2025. Want in? Raise your hand.

Every dashboard you’ve ever used probably promised “insights,” but how often do they help you fix what’s broken or capitalize on what’s working right away? More likely, you’ve found yourself stuck digging through layers of irrelevant data, hitting roadblocks, or waiting days for the insights you need today.

Andrew Wilson, VP of Data and Platforms, and Erik Omlid, CTO, at Aditude understand something fundamental: In ad ops, visibility is worthless without clarity.

In my exclusive conversation with Andrew and Erik, we walk through how publishers are already using these dashboards to reduce time wasted hunting through reports, increase their capabilities for spotting hidden revenue opportunities, and troubleshoot issues before they become crises.

If you’re responsible for results, this Q&A is for you. Read the full conversation.
