July 14, 2025 Newsletter: What Billboards in San Francisco Teach Us

I took the family out to San Francisco for most of the week. Karl the Fog personally saw to it that my kids never saw the Golden Gate Bridge. At one point, the only fog in the area was… around the bridge. Karl, you’re an asshole. My kids got to see Muir Woods, Alcatraz, and, unexpectedly, the Cleveland airport. Flying into Newark can knock the vacation right out of you.

One thing we saw a lot of in SF was billboards and signs selling AI solutions. They were everywhere. Even in a city that is focused on AIing the world, advertisers know that you need to be branding to stand out. Not everything needs to be digital.

That is especially true of our “hippy tour” of San Francisco. Cyrus drove us around in an old Volkswagen van, telling us the story of the city, but mostly stories about himself. What a great time. Better than any ChatGPT list of recommendations.

If neither example directly speaks to publishers whose business is driven by display advertising, it’s because you’re stuck in the fog. Advertising will always have a place – it just needs to be in the right place. That and the human condition will always be told better by humans. Let’s not forget that.

Big voices. Big conversations. Amanda Sabreah has been added to the Base•Camp Savannah agenda…

We’re thrilled to announce that Amanda Sabreah (Founder, Thought Factory, Strategist Behind Brands That Scale Commercially and Culturally) will be joining us as a keynote speaker at Base•Camp Savannah, October 5-8, 2025.

Trusted by brands like Coca-Cola, FIFA, TNT, and McDonald’s, Amanda will show us how publishers can think and operate like modern brands: staying relevant, earning trust, and unlocking long-term revenue. This is about audience loyalty, editorial influence, and building the kind of value premium advertisers are looking for.

And that’s just a taste of what you’ll find in the agenda. We’ll also be talking about:

  • Where will your 2026 revenue come from, and how do you plan for it now?
  • How are publishers rethinking their identity strategy, with or without cookies?
  • What does IO-based direct-sold growth actually look like?
  • What does it take to lead internal change when everyone is at capacity?
  • What happens when bots become your biggest traffic-driver?

And in case you missed it, resilience expert Deborah Gilboa, MD is joining us to open the event with a powerful session on how to lead through disruption and uncertainty… and we’re closing day one with her, too.

If you’ve been waiting to get a better sense of what Base•Camp Savannah is all about, this is that moment. Now is the time to take action. We’re shaping the conversations for October now, and the people committing today are the ones who will help lead them. Don’t wait.

Review the BaseCamp Savannah agenda.

Then, raise your hand to join us.

ICYMI: Early bird registration is open for Digital Day Camp!

There’s no shortage of events, but there’s only one Digital Day Camp.

On October 22, we’re bringing together Canadian digital advertising leaders (from publishing, ad tech, brands, and agencies) back together in Toronto for a working day built around what’s actually happening here. No global generalizations, no surface-level slides… only the honest, status quo-challenging conversations we need to move forward.

This event is designed for the people shaping the future of media and advertising in Canada. If that includes you, now’s the time to join us.

Eugene Healey will be at Base.Camp Lisbon (November 2-5)!

After Savannah and Toronto, we’re heading back to Europe to Portugal… and we’re starting off strong.

Eugene Healey, Founder of EH Strategy Consulting, helps brands stop talking at their audiences and start connecting with them in authentic, meaningful ways. And in his keynote, Eugene will challenge us with the questions we need to ask ourselves right now. How can publishers measure impact beyond vanity metrics? When trends fade and influencer tropes tire, will your content still matter? Do your current strategies reinforce the mediocrity bloat we’re all tired of or cut through it? Eugene will push us past easy answers to truly examine what our brands stand for, and why our audiences should still care.

Base.Camp Lisbon is one of the final stops on our 2025 calendar, and it’s built for ad ops and revenue operations leaders who don’t just see problems, they work hard together to fix them. Every session is built around the real challenges we’re all facing within the business side of publishing, and every conversation is shaped by people like you doing the work.
