The comparison of digital advertising to the fashion world, where quality has given into quantity, should spark some ideas for how we, as publishers, should move forward. In both cases, the cost of production is close to nothing. The result? Most of it is worth nothing. For clothing brands, just like publishers, you must try to stand out in a world flooded with cheap knock-offs. The bigger problem is that consumers like these cheap knock-offs. Advertisers and site visitors alike like infinite low-cost options.
So will fashion ever go out of fashion? No, but it will evolve. Fashion knows that what you wear daily won’t work for those moments when you want fashion to add to the experience. You pick a wedding dress, you don’t just grab something off the rack. You don’t just wear any jacket when you are the compère of Base•Camp.
I could keep going, but I don’t think I have to. If you are trying to think about the future of publishing, it might be easier to think about another industry – like fashion - to think of new ideas of what to do next.
I hope to see new ideas in Red Rock Canyon next week. I’ll bring some jackets.
I asked Permutive some questions about how they are thinking about reimagining advertising. Check out this Q&A.
Also, Primis is throwing one hell of a party on Wednesday night at HaSalon in New York. I feel like New York needs this right now. Space is limited, so I suggest asking someone from Primis for an invite or hit me up for the URL to request an invite (publishers, the link is in your version of the newsletter).
All we heard this past week was about the amazing group of publisher attendees we’ve assembled for Base•Camp. I agree, and I think these attendees combined with our VIPs, a couple of kick-ass keynotes, and an agenda built in large part by the community, will make this a magical time. Add Kitty’s touch to it, and you know that while our merch says the opposite, people will be talking about Red Rock Canyon well beyond our time there.
We can always squeeze another publisher in. Reach out if you can make it.
The completed agenda for the event is being updated on the website as I write this and will be announced on LinkedIn. There are too many highlights to list, but I’ll point out two sessions of interest to the typical subscriber of this newsletter:
- I’ll be talking with Jonathan Roberts (Dotdash Meredith) and Matt Sanchez (Yahoo) about the road ahead for publishers.
- I’ll follow that with an interview of Matthieu Roche (ID5) and Todd Parsons (Criteo) about the economics of identity.
Registration is open. You don’t have to ask anymore - go ahead and buy your ticket!
The big news is the early bird discount ends at the end of this week. The agenda is focused on collaboration between leaders from publishers, agencies, brands, and ad tech partners to share ideas to move digital advertising forward in Canada and transform the industry and our future. Big announcements are coming. Secure your seat - we’ve sold out the past two years!
