If publishers were a character in an 80’s action movie, you’d think we’d have hit the end of Act II by now. Act II is when everything that can go wrong for our hero has gone wrong. The end of Act II is the “all is lost” moment when the hero decides enough is enough and goes into action. Queue the music and queue the montage!
Except I’m not hearing any music. Considering everything that has happened and is presently going on, it's odd to say that we haven’t hit that moment yet. I’m beginning to understand why. Publishing doesn’t have main character energy. I don’t think publishing as we know it gets the montage. We’re not Rocky in the Rocky movies – we’re Rocky in the Creed movies.
It’s time to start to train the next generation and learn from past mistakes. We assumed that our mere existence would be enough for consumers and advertisers to come to us. We were wrong. The fight has changed, and that’s okay. But, it’s time to press play on the tape cassette and start working out, coaching, or getting out of the way. Enough is enough. Let Act III begin.
Speaking of consumers, this Thursday at 9:00 AM ET, I’m moderating a webinar to discuss the results of a survey of online users and how their experiences impact publisher strategies. Register today to hear this fascinating analysis and discuss how we move forward.
Oh, and then there's Base•Camp
Base•Camp attendee pre-event surveys are out, and if you’re attending, fill it out today! These pre-event surveys allow us to change the agenda as needed to make for a better experience. I knew “The Case for Automating the Front End of the Sales Process” would be well attended, but it’s the clear favorite for its block. I had a sneaking suspicion that “Will VPPA mean Consent or Pay?” might not get the love I had hoped for. That’s okay. We might swap it out with something like content taxonomies, which someone suggested.
This is why you should consider coming to Base•Camp: you help craft the agenda to maximize the value for you. Our venue is big enough to fit more publishers, so you still have time to raise your hand if you want to come.
Big announcements are coming. You saw the LinkedIn love we got for London. New York is going to be bigger. We expect to sell out. It’s time to register!
The agenda is coming together nicely - expect announcements this week and next. However, I wouldn’t wait – the Early Bird pricing ends Feb 28th. Sign up today!
The new event page has been published! It explains what Navigator is and is not. Check it out!
