August 25, 2025 Newsletter: What We All Want

I’m not sure how far the word has spread about last week’s Transaction ID conversation in the Community Slack that led to a discussion about the ecosystem’s security issues (buyers.json, anyone?). That was followed by a discussion on how creative size impacts performance and viewability once all the tracking pixels are added. Let’s just put it this way: I can look out my window and see that the weather is gorgeous, but I spent the weekend Slack-sifting for insights. Sigh.

Throughout all of these conversations, it’s clear: we want the other side to change the way they work so we can make more money. However, the incentives for us to change the way we work don’t provide short-term relief. Plus, doing the right thing isn’t always rewarded. Here’s the thing: my least favorite statement you can say to me about anything is, “that’s just the way it is.” (queue Bruce Hornsby). There is a palpable lack of trust in this industry, but keep talking, listening, and working on the problem. There’s too much to potentially lose if we don’t start to make progress.

Checklist for the last week of August:

  • Go outside.
  • Take a nap.
  • Take a walk.

Base.Camp Savannah is this October, and it’s built for action, not talk

If you’re like most of the pubs we’re talking to, you’re not behind on strategy because you don’t care. You’re behind because your team is under-resourced, your inbox is a never-ending five-alarm fire, and your calendar looks like a losing game of Tetris.

At Base.Camp Savannah, we’ve designed every session to build toward meaningful action. And together, we’re digging into the problems you’re already trying to solve:

  • Losing money to middlemen you know are there but can’t see? Patrick McCann will help you map the black box to show you where your margin losses are hiding.
  • Trying to make AI and automation work in the real world? Courtney Glaze is bringing receipts from inside The New York Times.
  • Fighting a seemingly losing battle of traffic drops and bot noise? We’ll unpack tactics for reaching the right people on the right platforms.
  • Are publishers seeing any real wins right now? Yes, they are. And we’ll have a lineup of powerful case studies where you’ll hear directly from those publishers on what’s working and what they’ve learned.
  • Where is revenue in 2026 really going to come from? We’ll have an honest conversation about the bets we can confidently make for the year ahead.
  • You’ve got the data, but are you struggling to tell your story with it? You can have the best first-party data, but without the right narrative, it doesn’t sell. Let’s fix that.

Publishers already confirmed for Savannah include People Inc., Gannett, Cox Automotive, Bloomberg, Golf.com, New York Post, The Weather Company, PGA TOUR, The New York Times, NASCAR, LoveToKnow Media, Ziff Davis, Tripadvisor, Graham Media, Edmunds.com, FanDuel Sports, and Chegg.

We’re almost there. Join us in Savannah to dig into the big questions, share what’s working, fix what’s not, and leave with a plan you can put into motion the very next day.

Early-bird pricing for Digital Day Camp is still on, but not for long…

After 3 sold-out events, Digital Day Camp is returning Toronto on October 22, 2025, the only event of its kind for Canadian digital media leaders. Together, we’ll discuss the questions that are keeping us all up at night, including:

  • Can direct-sold strategies still thrive alongside programmatic dominance?
  • And what does it take to make data-driven approaches actually pay off?
  • Where should we really be placing our bets for 2026?
  • What role will agentic advertising play in redefining the market?
  • How do we raise the bar for CTV ad quality?

Leaders from Pelmorex, Narcity Media Group, Better Collective, and Kobayashi + Zeitguys (just to name a few) are already signed up to join us. Now, we need your voice. But get on the list now, while early bird registration for Digital Day Camp is still open!

The Base.Camp Lisbon agenda is built around your questions, your goals, your challenges

After Savannah, we’re heading to Portugal (November 2-5) to give you what you need: the right people in the room talking through the conversations this industry typically avoids until it’s too late:

  • Making direct-sold work when traffic trends aren’t on your side.
  • What "privacy-compliant" actually means when revenue’s on the line.
  • Fixing the disconnect between sales and ad ops.
  • Who your real audience is, and what to do once you find them.
  • Why your tech stack keeps underperforming (and what better looks like).
  • How publishers are building workflows that capitalize on the disruptive norms we’re all living in right now.

Leaders from Tripadvisor, Wall Street Journal, Kinective Media℠ by United Airlines, The Weather Company, Publisher Collective, Telegraph Media Group, Livenation, City Digital Oy, and Condé Nast are already confirmed. If you’re interested in joining us, now is the time to raise your hand.

Women’s Space

Our Women’s Space is growing. We are working on a Code of Conduct for events. One that Beeler.Tech will use and ask all our attendees to agree and adhere to, while then asking the industry to sign on to the same code of conduct. There are lots of ideas about where to do with this to make real change, not only for women, but for everyone. We want to elevate respect and professionalism.

We have a Slack channel and a WhatsApp group. The WhatsApp group has more conversation, but join either or both and add to the conversation!

Please reach out to Melissa if you would like to join one or both.
